When it comes to industrial equipment, simplicity and durability often make the best design. For this project, I was tasked with developing a sheet metal extension reel that could be manufactured quickly, assembled easily, and stand up to long-term use. It also needed to be brandable, so it featured a face plate that could be customised to suite the clients needs as well as painting the reel the preferred colours.
The design was kept intentionally minimalist and practical — a combination of cut-to-length steel tubes and sheet metal components. These were bent, welded, and assembled into a rugged reel that delivers strength and reliability without unnecessary complexity.
Project Highlights
- Designed a sheet metal extension reel for industrial use.
- Used a combination of steel tubing and sheet metal parts.
- Delivered cut lists and bend drawings for manufacturing.
- Simplified welding and assembly for efficient production.
- Cost-effective, production-ready design.
Techniques Used
- 3D CAD modelling of sheet metal and tube assemblies.
- Flat patterns and DXF outputs for laser cutting.
- Bend drawings for accurate forming.
- Cut list generation for tubing.
- Design drawings for welded assemblies.
Why Sheet Metal Design Matters
Sheet metal is one of the most versatile manufacturing methods available. It allows for:
- Cost-efficient production at low and high volumes.
- Strong yet lightweight designs.
- Easy integration with tube and welded components.
- Quick turnaround with laser cutting and bending services.
At ADB Consulting, I specialise in sheet metal design for manufacturing (DFM). From flat patterns and laser cutting files to bending drawings and welded assemblies, I provide complete deliverables that make your project ready for fabrication — whether in South Africa or abroad.
If you’re looking for a partner to design sheet metal parts, assemblies, or welded structures, I can help you move from concept to production quickly and effectively.
